In July 2019, in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the court sent Aleksandr Vavilov,51, and Aleksey Oreshkov, 48, to the pre-trial detention center. Both are accused by investigating officers of engaging in extremist activities as presently defined by courts interpreting the peaceful religious beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Nizhny Novgorod Region
At least 13 believers were detained during a special operation in the Nizhny Novgorod region on July 16 and 17, 2019. One of them, 48-year-old Alexey Oreshkov, is now in a pretrial detention center. Another is under house arrest. The situation with the other detainees is to be clarified.
On July 16 and 17, 2019, security forces conducted about 10 searches in the houses of Witnesses in Nizhny Novgorod and the town of Pavlovo (Nizhny Novgorod Region). In at least one instance, agents forced the residents to lie on the floor. Detained men and women were interrogated.
On 10 February 2017, a group of 15 law enforcement officers disrupted a religious service attended by approximately 100 Jehovah’s Witnesses.
